Marking the 50th anniversary of her passing on October 18th, light coloratura soprano Janine Micheau epitomized post-war French vocal art: supreme agility, meticulous attention to prosody, and an instantly recognizable, focused timbre. One of the defining operatic figures of her era, she mentored the next generation, most famously her fellow Toulouse-born soprano Mady Mesplé. Micheau’s crystal-clear diction also made her a cherished interpreter of French mélodie, featured here alongside another great Debussy specialist, pianist Aldo Ciccolini.
