February 20th 2026 marks the 400th anniversary of the death of John Dowland, a leading figure in the rich English school that made the Elizabethan court one of the most active artistic centres of the European Renaissance. Although Dowland is best known for his numerous compositions for the lute, he also left behind many secular airs, both monodic and polyphonic, of exceptional refinement.
