Martina Arroyo, the American soprano who enjoyed great success on stage in the 1960s and 1970s, has died at the age of 90. She was among the first Black opera singers to achieve international acclaim, helping pave the way for greater diversity and representation on the lyric stage. Although she is best known for her great Verdi roles, she has also distinguished herself in other repertoires, notably this superb performance of the Gurre-Lieder, alongside Janet Baker and Alexander Young.
