The Cuban-American pianist Horacio Gutiérrez was a favourite of London audiences in the 1970s and 1980s, and a regular guest of the LPO. His numerous collaborations with Klaus Tennstedt, then the orchestra’s music director, always sparked excitement, but were recorded on disc on only one occasion: in this recording of two milestones from the Romantic repertoire, newly remastered, where Gutiérrez’s athletic playing really shines, and where the musical chemistry between performers is evident.
