Danny Elfman: Cello Concerto & Film Music

Gautier Capuçon enters the musical world of composer Danny Elfman with the premiere recording of his sensational Cello Concerto, written expressly for the French cellist in a uniquely collaborative and interpersonal process not unlike that of the cinema: in the composer’s words, “My job is really just to connect with you, the musician, and make it meaningful—which makes it psychologically similar to scoring a film with a director.” Performed with Lionel Bringuier and the BBC Concert Orchestra, the concerto appears alongside themes from some of Danny Elfman’s most beloved film and television scores, including Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Simpsons, Spider-Man, and Good Will Hunting, all arranged by pianist Jérôme Ducros. “I've known his music for a long time, and I love his way of writing,” Gautier says. “Danny's music is so personal, so creative, so inspired. He is always himself, but always exploring.”
