October 15th marks the centenary of Karl Richter, a key figure in the performance of early music, and of Bach in particular. Straddling the divide between the ponderous post-war interpretations, tinged with an ill-suited romanticism, and the HIP revolution that began to take shape in the late 1960s, Richter significantly transformed our understanding of Bach’s sacred music through his focus on polyphonic transparency and rhythmic clarity. This collection includes all of Bach’s cantatas (including one now attributed to Telemann) recorded for the Teldec label in the 1950s, many of which are available in digital format for the first time, with some having been remastered in high resolution for this special occasion.
