In 1975, Sir Neville Marriner teamed up with Rodney Slatford, his leading double bassist in the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, to record pieces from the late Classical and early Romantic era, at a time when the instrument was particularly popular with composers. We can enjoy in this album beautiful renditions of orchestral pieces featuring double bass by Dittersdorf and Keyper (one of the most prolific composers for this instrument, with seven concertos), and chamber pieces by Rossini and Michael Haydn.
