Mariam Batsashvili plays music that brings her home in Georgia, an intimate collection of solo piano pieces dedicated to Georgian composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. All four of the composers featured on the album lived and wrote during her own lifetime and helped shape the musical landscape of Georgia. Selections from Gia Kancheli’s 33 Miniatures, fragments of themes from his film music, appear alongside other compact yet moving works by Elizbar Lomdaridze, Vaja Azarashvili and Nikoloz Rachveli, whose two contributions he wrote specially for Mariam. With Georgia, perhaps her most personal project to date, Mariam Batsashvili invites us into the heart of her homeland’s musical legacy, whether the melodies are old friends or vibrant discoveries.
