He is the other great flutist of the 20th-century, alongside the irreplaceable Jean-Pierre Rampal: Aurèle Nicolet would have turned 100 on January 22nd. An exceptional soloist, he was Emmanuel Pahud's distant predecessor as principal flute of the Berlin Philharmonic, as well as his teacher and role model. This album of great classics from the flute repertoire, dating from 1959-1960, sounds surprisingly modern with the harpsichord of Karl Richter.
