Riccardo Muti’s interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s symphonies caused a sensation in the music world in the late 1970s. In contrast to versions that often suffered from opulence or excessive pathos, he broke with interpretive traditions and delivered a no-frills performance, faithful to the original score, with relentless rhythmic tension and great clarity in the instrumental textures.
