In honour of the 100th birthday of the legend Hildegard Knef, acclaimed Fatma Said is releasing a unique musical homage: a brand-new, classical version of Knef’s iconic chanson, "Für mich soll's rote Rosen regnen“ (Let it rain red roses for me).
Recorded at the majestic Pyramids of Giza, this special track captures the essence of a crosscultural collaboration. Fatma Said, whose deep passion for the German Lied tradition began during her studies at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin.
Hildegard Knef (1925-2002):
Knef was a legendary German actress, singer, and writer who became a cultural icon of post-war Germany.
Following success in German cinema and a contract with 20th Century Fox, Knef achieved international fame starring in the lead role in the original 1955 Broadway production of Cole Porter’s Silk Stockings (478 runs!).
Her international profile grew with her own BBC show “The Hildegard Kneff Show” in 1958. In the 1960s, she became a highly successful chanson singer known for her smoky voice and the defiant anthem, "Für mich soll's rote Rosen regnen." Her candid autobiography, Der geschenkte Gaul (The Gift Horse), also became an international bestseller (New York Times #1, Germany #1, UK #2, more than 4 million copies sold).
Knef remains celebrated as a multifaceted, resilient figure who symbolized post-war reinvention.
