La muette de Portici is historically famous as a performance of the patriotic aria “Amour sacré de la patrie” given in 1830 at Brussels’ Théâtre de la Monnaie, having filled the audience with passion, triggered the riots that led to the Belgian revolution and the independence of the country. Auber’s poignant opera remained however poorly known and rarely recorded (only two complete recordings available), making this 5-stars cast version all the more essential.
