Grieg: Piano, Orchestral & Vocal Works, Chamber Music

Edvard Grieg honed his skills as a composer at the prestigious conservatory in Leipzig, but he drew his distinctive inspiration from his native Norway, with its thriving folk culture and spectacular landscapes. His gifts for haunting melody and poignant harmony extend far beyond such widely-loved works as his piano concerto and music for Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt. They are equally manifest in his other orchestral music and a wealth of intimately-scaled works, not least his 66 Lyric Pieces for piano, his sonatas and quartet for strings and his many dozens of songs.
