Bruno-Leonardo Gelber’s immense talent and vision shine through in these recordings of two of Brahms’s early works, marked by the young man’s symphonic ambition (the Third Sonata had been described by Schumann, to whom he had presented it, as a “symphony in disguise”) and his devotion to Clara, which radiates through the andante of the sonata and the adagio of the concerto.
