In the mid-1960s, weary of the constant ego clashes and the lack of rehearsal time, Giulini left the stage and laid down his baton of pit conductor to focus almost exclusively on symphonic music. This was the era of great masterpieces on record, particularly numerous with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
