Released today: Maria Callas returns to LP, her iconic Carmen reissued on vinyl

A true collectors' item, her unparalleled 1964 Carmen has been remastered for a deluxe 3-LP set.

Maria Callas never played Bizet's sultry gypsy heroine Carmen on stage, but her vocal interpretation, captured in the studio with the Orchestre du Théâtre National de l'Opéra under the baton of her frequent collaborator Georges Prêtre, has become synonymous with the role. No other singer has captured that heady blend of seduction, empowerment and just a hint of the coy that Callas poured into her habanera, and which led Gramophone critics of the day to declare: "Hers is a Carmen to haunt you."

Carmen was also La Divina's only complete recording of a French opera. It is fitting, then, that this is the iconic record, from all the studio recordings in the Maria Callas Remastered Edition, chosen to be re-issued on vinyl in a lavish 3-LP set marking a major milestone in her career.

Warner Classics presents a 180g Vinyl Edition of the legendary Callas’ Carmen, a faithful reproduction of the original release (including a full libretto in LP size), but remastered from the Paris vaults using the only set of tapes approved by Maria Callas herself.

Opera lovers and audiophiles will also want to get their hands on the complementary single 180g LP Maria Callas RemasteredWarner Classics' first vinyl release in 15 years dedicated to the greatest diva of all time. The selection of arias, including O Mio Babbino Caro, Casta Diva and Vissi d'Arte, has been remastered in high-definition from the original tapes at Abbey Road Studio, making it possible to experience the truest and most intimate voice of Callas in warm vinyl sound.
