Director of Maria Callas biopic announced... But who will play the iconic diva?

The daring film will be the first to centre on the tumultuous relationship between Callas and her lover Aristotle Onassis.

The Cannes Festival is in full swing, and audiences have just seen Maria Callas portrayed by actress and model Paz Vega in the opening-night film Grace of Monaco.

Now it has been confirmed that Niki Caro is set to write and direct a long-awaited biopic based on the legendary opera star’s doomed affair with billionaire Aristotle Onassis. Callas was heartbroken and publicly humiliated in 1968 when the Greek shipping tycoon left her to marry another glamorous public figure: Jacqueline Kennedy.

“I have a great fascination for Maria Callas, who was such a powerful woman and artist, but also troubled and stuck in this very destructive relationship,” said the New Zealand-born Caro, whose previous films include Whale Rider and North Country (the latter starring Charlize Theron).

Filming of this European/Australian co-production is scheduled for late autumn in Italy, France and the Czech Republic. The cast has yet to be announced but Eva Green is rumoured to be attached to the project in the lead role.
