If there is one among the many German composers who inspired Bach who can truly be said to have had a decisive influence, it is Georg Böhm! The young Johann Sebastian indeed spent time with his elder during his apprenticeship in Lüneburg, and in recent years musicologists have shed light on the mystery surrounding their relationship by unearthing scores written by the student and annotated by the master. We know of several superb organ works by Böhm, particularly numerous varied chorale partitas, a genre he can be considered the inventor of, and one that was destined for great posterity. This comprehensive monograph, recorded by Marie-Clarie Alain on two magnificent Danish organs, pays a beautiful tribute to this somewhat overlooked and forgotten composer, whose musical verve is incomparable.
