Wolfgang Sawallisch dies aged 89

Wolfgang Sawallisch was one of the last of the old-school German conductors, who led the Philadelphia Orchestra for nearly a decade and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich for two decades before that. He died on January 22nd at his home in Grassau, Germany at age 89.

EMI Classics is fortunate to have recorded with this celebrated conductor. Throughout his career, Sawallisch was acclaimed for his natural talent, creativity and ability to lead. He was among the youngest to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic, which he first did in 1953, and at Bayreuth, where he first appeared in 1957.
