200th anniversary of Richard Wagner's birth

200 years ago today, on May 22 1813, Wilhelm Richard Wagner was born in Leipzig. During his lifetime, the German composer, a representative of a highly modern operatic style, was considered revolutionary, his music difficult, even unplayable.

1876 Wagner conducted the premiere of his famous cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen in his own opera house at Bayreuth and the music world split into fans (Wagnerians) and opponents. Today, Wagner's importance is beyond doubt. To celebrate the bicentenary of his birth, EMI Classics released two boxes and a double CD that document his work; the Great Opera Box (36 CDs), the double CD The Essential Wagner and the 3 CD box The Other Wagner, with many rarities - Wagner's piano music, symphonies, concert overtures, marches and choral works.
