Le Sacre du Printemps Centenary Celebration with Sir Simon Rattle

Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker, whose Grammy winning accounts of Stravinsky’s Symphony in C and Symphony of Psalms are among Gramophone magazine’s Top 10 Stravinsky Recordings (2011), return to the composer with a recording of the ground-breaking ballet Le Sacre du printemps.

“It is probably no accident that Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, which is really the seminal work of the 20th century in so many ways, happened in 1913, just before the greatest conflagration that the world had ever known…Stravinsky talked of trying to recapture the violence, the sense of the earth cracking open, that he witnessed every spring in Russia…but on a deeper level, it’s a musical metaphor for the vessel of an exhausted era cracking open.” (Sir Simon Rattle)

The programme on this release also includes new recordings of Stravinsky’s Symphonies of Wind Instruments and Apollon Musagète, another of the Russian master’s breathtaking ballets.

Out in April - find out more about the album here.
