The last Romantic: Acclaimed all over the world for his breathtaking virtuosity at the keyboard, Rachmaninov the composer was a controversial figure: critics and fellow composers who had long since shifted towards a more modern style found his Late Romantic music old-fashioned. But the public loved him, and many of his works are among the most popular of all Classical compositions. Rachmaninov’s scores captivate the listener with their shimmering, colourful harmonies, with their infectious power and striking rhythms. But above all, this is music of grand feelings, of deep yearning and tender melancholy.
