How Mozart’s last symphony came by the name associated with it since the 19th century is not reliably attested. Celebrated even by Mozart’s contemporaries as 'the supreme triumph of instrumental composition', it is recognized not only as the climax of Mozart’s genius but as the commanding pinnacle of Classical symphonic music before Beethoven.
