A 5-CD complete collection of Brahms’s symphonies, overtures and major choral works from Kurt Masur and the New York Philharmonic, originally released in 1994 to great critical acclaim. Nigel Simeone in CD Review (April 1994) praised Masur’s approach to German repertoire: “He is a globe-trotting maestro who has managed at the same time to uphold the elevated musical values of some of his most illustrious predecessors, especially conductors of the German school.” Gramophone (February 1996) singled out this version of the Requiem as “not ‘just any old Brahms Requiem’ but a rather special one.” Christopher Dingle in the BBC Music Magazine suggested “…Masur outflanks many of his rivals with quietly self-confident readings. The New York Philharmonic sounds magnificent whilst the live recordings are excellent.” Brahms’s Schicksalslied [‘Song of Destiny’], written shortly after the Requiem, is a rarely recorded work. Masur’s vocal soloists include Sylvia McNair and Hakan Hagegard. This reissue is released at budget price with new packaging and cover art.
