The Swiss-born pianist Karl Engel (b. 1923), studied with Alfred Cortot in Paris and performed and recorded with a distinguished roster of artists including Pablo Casals, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Hermann Prey and Peter Schreier. Karl Engel recorded the complete Mozart piano sonatas and concertos for Telefunken (Teldec’s predecessor). The concertos were recorded in the Großer Saal of the Mozarteum, Salzburg, between 1974 and 1978. The Mozarteum Orchestra was founded in 1841 by the composer’s widow (Constanze) and the city of Salzburg.
