China tour with the Russian National Orchestra
Comment from José Serebrier before the tour started: "As we depart from Moscow to Beijing, we all wonder how it will all work out with two large symphony orchestras, the Russian National Orchestra, RNO, and the China National Symphony Orchestra, CNSO, in the cavernous Great Hall of the People, normally reserved for China's large political gatherings. The theme of the event is "the sea", hence the requested repertoire of Debussy "La Mer", Tchaikovsky "The Tempest", Rimsky-Korsakov "Scheherazade" and Wagner "Flying Dutchman" Overture. The concert/event on the 27th of December has been sold-out for weeks. Besides the natural curiosity, there is a great deal of excitement built up in both orchestras and both communities, and the event is being perceived as one of cultural significance. As to be expected, it will be preceded by both national anthems and speeches. My rehearsals in Moscow with the RNO have gone wonderfully. This is my second international tour with them this year. Just a few months ago we traveled to South America. There are a wonderful touring group, relaxed and totally professional."
