Happy birthday, Georges Prêtre!

Maria Callas' favourite French maestro turns 90 today.

The revered French conductor, born on 14 August, 1924, studied harmony with Maurice Duruflé and conducting with André Cluytens at the Conservatoire de Paris, becoming music director of the Paris Opéra 1970–1971.

He has worked extensively with Maria Callas, recording her iconic 1964 Carmen, her 1964 Tosca with Tito Gobbi and two legendary Paris recitals. Read a rare interview with Prêtre about Callas here.
