Happy birthday to Christa Ludwig

The great mezzo soprano Christa Ludwig turns 85 today. Tomorrow she will celebrate it in the Vienna State Opera, where a complimentary matinee will take place.
Ludwig made her debut when she was 18 years old at Frankfurt as Prince Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus. In 1955, she joined the Vienna State Opera, where she was appointed "Kammersängerin" in 1962. She performed with the Vienna State Opera for more than thirty years.

After a stage career of almost 50 years she bid farewell from her audience in the Vienna State Opera as Klytemnestra in Richard Strauss' Elektra.

Christa Ludwig recorded for EMI since the late 50s. Her vast discography includes legendary recordings like Strauss' Rosenkavalier (with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf) and Bellini's Norma (with Maria Callas).
