"A Late Quartet" with Christopher Walken and Anne Sofie von Otter

The new film "A Late Quartet", starring Christopher Walken as a cellist in a string quartet that is famous for playing Beethoven's String Quartet No 14, opus 131, is in cinema this spring.

After 25 years of success, the string quartet seems to be ripped apart - by the cellist's diagnosis with Parkinson's Disease, desires, competing egos and supressed emotions of the other members.

The String Quartet No. 14 in C sharp minor is one of Beethoven's Late Quartets and was his personal favourite. It consists of seven movements and the composer demanded that it be played attacca - without a pause between the movements. The film heavily stresses this, the attaca becoming a key element. Mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter plays the role of the singer Miriam. The prestigious magazine Gramophone mocked up a magazine cover for the film, which you can find here.

The Alban Berg Quartet recorded Beethoven's String Quartet No. 14 in 1984. You can find this great recording here.
